SPACE*K

Client: Dunstable, Anglie
Completion: 1998

The hangar for gliders in the town of Dunstable came into being during my research fellowship at London’s Chelsea College of Art.
It is based on the existing interwar functionalist building from Ben Nicholson.
The two newly-designed buildings are: the hangar and the “hill.” The hangar for the gliders is designed as a wing with a barrier-free ramp – the tail.
The “hill” is a building with accommodations and facilities for clients together with berths for four motor aircraft.
Urbanism respects the shape of a “wind hill,” where the wind rises and easily carries the glider into the clouds.
